Somos Científicos: bringing students and engineers together online

Sponsored by Ramon Rementeria, the Somos Científicos ¡Sácanos de aquí ! project, a 2018 Thales Foundation winner, has begun! The project connects thousands of students with 30 science and technology experts through an online platform and gives young people an active role in leading the conversation.

From 16 to 27 April, nearly 2,000 young people aged 10 to 18 from 85 schools in Spain and Latin America will communicate online with 30 science and engineering experts on the Somos Científicos platform.

The project is divided into five zones, each led by six engineers who will communicate with 25 classes. In the Future Zone, dedicated to innovation and advanced engineering, six Thales experts (from Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Peru) will share their passion for innovation and technology with 350 to 500 students.

Read their profiles online: Ana Rincón del Olmo, Carlos Tárraga García, Esther de Juana López, Juan José Forteza Esteban, Lara Arche Andradas, Ramon Rementeria et Evelyn Loredo.

Using the platform’s instant messaging feature, students can ask any questions they like related to the engineers’ areas of expertise (for example, high speed trains, cybersecurity, etc.) and will vote for their favourite scientist, as the online project is also a competition among scientists in which students are the judges.

The reward for the winning expert and best class will be used to fund an additional science education activity, such as a visit to the expert’s scientific centre.

Interviewed on InnovaSpain, Ramon said the initiative has multiple benefits. Voting and being free to ask any type of question offers young people a more fun approach to science and leads to interesting discussions, while giving them an active role in the project.
